the L.L. Bean Fly-Fishing Handbook is an excellent source. Myself I took a non credit fly fishing course at our local Junior College and learned the basics. Actually they say a good starter rod and reel combo will cost around $200.00 I plan to get a good one one day but I have been using a $20.00 Walmart Flay Rod and Rell combo. The funny thing about that class is we also paid to go on a field trip to Beavers Bend and since we did not have our expensive rods yet we used the furnished rods wich were $20.00 combo at the fly shop on the river.
Out of 6 people I was the only one who caught anything that day. Anyway that book will give you most of the information you will need. Here is a link to a fly fishing forum if you are interested
